Esquire Japan featured Nyetimber as their brand project for Men’s Club this month.
“A pioneer of English sparkling wine, Nyetimber produces sparkling wine from its own vineyards. In 2018, Nyetimber’s winemakers became the first sparkling winemaker outside the Champagne region to win the prestigious Sparkling Winemaker of the Year award. This wine is the perfect accompaniment to a special dinner at home. There are six varieties available in Japan. The three bottles on the left are multi-vintage, and the three bottles on the right are single vintage. The two bottles on the right are the signature prestige cuvees. The company’s vineyard is located in southern England, in the terroir that continues from the Champagne region and is said to be suitable for growing grapes for high-quality sparkling wine. Also notable is the company’s pursuit of traceability, which is rare in the industry. Each bottle is labelled by variety, blend ratio, and bottling date. Anne Krebiehl has published her review of Nyetimber’s Tillington 2014 on Falstaff, following a tasting with Brad. She gives the wine 94 points, saying, ‘After an initial whiff of reduction dissipates, there are notes of freshly cut green and red apple and a touch of sea breeze. More air reveals freshly cut red apple flesh. The palate comes in with a kind of rounded energy, with fruity élan that is reminiscent of ripe, red apple. The mousse is fine and creamy, the body is generous yet svelte, and there is a most lovely edge of pith that almost destines this for the table. It is the subtle apple-scented creaminess on the salty, dry finish that is utterly disarming. Impeccable balance.’

The article is set as an interview format between the interviewer and “1086 Prestige Cuvée 2009” as a human. He details his birthplace, West Sussex, as a sunny place cooled by the sea breeze. The meaning behind 1086 is explained as the year that the name Nyetimber was inscribed in the UK land register as an official estate. He also describes his style (aka the design of the bottle), as a representation of the blue sky in Sussex. The fertile soil of his hometown is shown in the colour of his trousers. The humanized “1086 Nyetimber Prestige Cuvée 2009” describes his favorite time to drink is at ‘parties or with my family and friends, as well as camping solo’, as he claims it allows you to concentrate on the delicate flavours of the mellow fruit.

If you’re not doing dry January but want to cut back on wine drinking this month (or for longer), then one simple idea is to buy smaller bottles. Couples sharing a half bottle of wine – that’s 37.5cl – are getting one largish glassful each; and one person opening it can drink it up over two or three days without wasting any that has gone stale.
The demand for half bottles has increased hugely since the first lockdown, according to Victoria Stephens-Clarke, who runs The Little Fine Wine Company. Now she sells over 140 wines in half bottles; the most popular include Nyetimber English sparkling.

A blend of 76 percent Pinot Noir and 24 percent Chardonnay, this special bottling from Nyetimber—only made in good years—comes from West Sussex, a part of southeast England that boasts an extension of the chalk-rich soils of Champagne. Aromas of fresh-baked bread open, along with rich citrus (a touch of orange peel) and hints of red berries, hazelnuts and a salty ocean breeze.
