Want to cut down on wine this month? Check out quality small-bottle options
If you’re not doing dry January but want to cut back on wine drinking this month (or for longer), then one simple idea is to buy smaller bottles. Couples sharing a half bottle of wine – that’s 37.5cl – are getting one largish glassful each; and one person opening it can drink it up over two or three days without wasting any that has gone stale.
The demand for half bottles has increased hugely since the first lockdown, according to Victoria Stephens-Clarke, who runs The Little Fine Wine Company. Now she sells over 140 wines in half bottles; the most popular include Nyetimber English sparkling.
Nyetimber 2013 Tillington Single Vineyard England
A blend of 76 percent Pinot Noir and 24 percent Chardonnay, this special bottling from Nyetimber—only made in good years—comes from West Sussex, a part of southeast England that boasts an extension of the chalk-rich soils of Champagne. Aromas of fresh-baked bread open, along with rich citrus (a touch of orange peel) and hints of red berries, hazelnuts and a salty ocean breeze. The palate is powerful and long, layered with clementine fruit, raspberry and rhubarb delivered with elegant, creamy bubbles.
Following a virtual media meet with Brad, lifestyle publication Dime has published a piece online on Nyetimber. Translated into English, the piece reads:
The world’s wine lovers are now taking notice of “English sparkling wine”, with the popularity growing to the point that even the big French Champagne houses have been looking into their own. One of the best English sparkling wines is made by ‘Nyetimber’, a West Sussex-based winemaker. The interview with Brad begins by outlining the history of Nyetimber, which stretches back over 900 years. He describes the development of Nyetimber as a sparkling wine brand, with 2006 being the beginning of 15 years of dedication to making the best sparkling wine in the world. Nyetimber produces sparkling wine from its own 11 vineyards, where three varieties are grown: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. Nyetimber is also described as the first English sparkling winemaker to grow all three varieties in their own vineyards.
When it comes to the Japanese market, Brad describes the Japanese people as very experienced and knowledgeable consumers of sparkling wine, and Nyetimber sees Japan as an important market to reach out to.
In West Sussex, the winemaking couple are toasting a new extension filled with British crafts.
British wine has never had more sparkle, and Eric, the owner behind Nyetimber, the UK’s leading fizz label, has plenty to toast this Christmas. Nyetimber’s wines are served in Annabel’s, the Savoy and (maybe better to draw a veil over this client) at Downing Street functions. They are the bubbles of choice in British embassies across the world. Demand for Nyetimber’s 2022 rosé has been unprecedented. And at the estate, on the South Downs in West Sussex, Eric Heerema has completed a new extension filled with great British design.
J. Sheekey, in collaboration with Nyetimber, have created this creamy seasonal trifle, so good they had to share the recipe with us. A festive favourite sure to earn you brownie points with guests this Christmas…
Who doesn’t love a traditional English trifle? This Christmassy trifle features classic rhubarb, custard trifle with a luscious Nyetimber jelly and whipped Chantilly cream. We’d recommend serving it in Victorian glassware to really secure that wow factor.
NYETIMBER AND LAY LONDON
Much-loved sparkling English Wine producer Nyetimber has partnered with renowned tablescaper LAY London to launch an exclusive range of homeware items. Select from glossy baubles, printed napkins and tablecloths, inspired by Nyetimber’s fittingly festive spearmint green colour palette. Purchase as part of a gifting bundle with a bottle of Cuvee Chérie, which is the perfect dinner table centrepiece this holiday season.
The Editor In Chief, Mr Tai, is a fan of Nyetimber wines. The article reads, ‘However, as one of the largest importers and consumers of Champagne, the UK is now producing fine sparkling wine in the South of England. This is clearly a sign that the northern limit of viticulture has moved northwards, where the calcareous soils are ideal for growing sparkling wine grapes.
Nyetimber, Classic Cuvée NV England
It may seem strange to some, but this is a great price for the principal wine of England’s pioneer producer of wines that give Champagne a run for its money. Two-thirds of the Chardonnay-heavy blend was 2017, enriched by portions from 2015, 2014 and 2013. Nyetimber’s growing range of wines is made by a hugely talented Canadian couple whose output is irreproachable.
Chelsea favourite Bluebird is going with the starry night theme too, partnering with Nyetimber for a specially-themed tea. The immersive theme encapsulates everything from the decor – with twinkling lights, Christmas trees, winter huts and blankets aplenty – to the menu – which features truffle potatoes, foie gras and warm chocolate pudding. They are even throwing in complimentary Lindisfarne rock oysters when you buy a bottle of Nyetimber Blanc de Blanc.

A new review summary of sparkling wine has been published by Jancis Robinson, including 158 Champagnes, English Sparkling Wines and other bottles of fizz from throughout the world. In it, they review Nyetimber Blanc de Blancs 2014, saying “This smells like an autumn apple festival. Gloriously appley. And such purity! A wine that is not relying on lees aging to give it depth of flavour or richness – it’s all there in this incredible fruit. It fills the mouth, a trumpet concerto of silver and gold notes, while the acidity feels like the spine-tingling vibrations of harp strings, thrumming up and down – I can feel this wine like a thread-fine electric current under my skin and through my bones. Translucent white spring florals dancing weightlessly through citrus; lime, yuzu, grapefruit feel. Then, right at the end, a lick of cold salted butter, a dab of cumin and coriander spice. Outstanding.”
Welcome to Nyetimber. Before we get started, we just need to get the legal bit out of the way.
