Today, we’re excited to share the inspiring journey of Harry Gilbert, a former Plumpton College student who embarked on a transformative experience at Nyetimber. Harry’s insights into his time with us offer a unique perspective on how our internship program can shape young professionals. Let’s delve into Harry’s story and discover the impact his time at Nyetimber has had on his career path.
My passion for hospitality ignited in catering, evolving into a love for wine. Yearning for a career connecting with people daily over shared passion, I enrolled in Plumpton College’s International Wine Business BA program. There, I gained a strong foundation in wine industry knowledge, preparing me for a career in on-trade sales. Practical experience as a sommelier at The Angel by Elly Wentworth refined my sales skills and customer interaction. Returning part-time to this successful wine-focused business deepened my understanding.
Additionally, harvests at Everflyht and Harmony provided invaluable hands-on experience in viticulture and viniculture. I am immensely grateful for the knowledge, confidence, and privilege of working alongside inspiring mentors at Plumpton.
The internship provided deep insights into the competitive UK sparkling wine market, illustrating the significant effort Nyetimber invests in maintaining its edge. I learned how crucial it is to build brand awareness and increase market share in both domestic and export markets.
Focusing on on-trade sales, I observed how the sales team works closely with other departments to secure and maintain accounts. My time with trade marketing and events emphasized the power of consumer activations and the importance of events in fostering brand loyalty through positive associations and education. The tasks I completed were creatively challenging, allowing me to apply my Plumpton education in practical ways.
During open days, I saw first-hand how brand ambassadors effectively engage with consumers, bridging the gap between my academic knowledge and sommelier experience. It was impressive to witness the teamwork required to create a seamless and educational experience for each guest.
Overall, this internship enriched my understanding of sales, marketing, events, and the overall operations of a wine business, providing practical experience that complements my academic background.
While hosting a key account at the estate, I participated in a food and wine pairing experience that deepened my understanding of complementary flavors.
We started with charred English asparagus paired with 1086 by Nyetimber 2013. The wine’s citrus notes and creamy texture beautifully balanced the dish’s richness, highlighting how the acidity and body of 1086 by Nyetimber wines can enhance complex flavors.
The next course, cod loin with wild garlic pomme purée, paired with 1086 by Nyetimber Rosé 2013, transformed my view of food pairings. The wine’s red berry notes complemented the delicate cod, while its acidity and minerality balanced the dish’s rich, earthy elements.
Finally, a white chocolate crémeux with kiwi and basil sorbet, paired with Cuvee Cherie, showcased the wine’s versatility, with the creamy sweetness of the wine perfectly matching the dessert.
As a sommelier, this experience was invaluable, revealing the versatility of English sparkling wine, especially Nyetimber, beyond traditional pairings. I’ll use this insight to advocate for English sparkling wines, particularly in the on-trade, to boost sales through enhanced pairing experiences.
It’s hard to choose a highlight because each day brought new knowledge and the chance to learn from industry experts. Everyone made the experience both educational and enjoyable. While my skills lean toward sales, I gained insight into the synergy needed across departments for success. I loved the events, especially representing the brand at the Queens Tennis tournament and Henley Royal Regatta—it was a privilege.
Each person I met is a credit to the brand, and I hope our paths cross again.
