NYETIMBER: WORLD-RENOWNED ENGLISH SPARKLING WINE

Situated in the rural heart of the South of England, Nyetimber use only the finest estate-grown fruit to craft our award-winning world-renowned wines. Created using the traditional method of sparkling wine production, our meticulously crafted wines combine science and artistry – all in the pursuit of perfection.

OUR HISTORY

The Nyetimber estate counts three major milestones in its history. Its earliest beginnings saw it named in the Domesday Book in 1086, almost 1,000 years ago, when the peaceful valley of Nitimbreha made its first appearance in recorded history. (It’s believed Nitimbreha refers to a newly timbered house or perhaps a small timber plantation.) The second milestone was the planting of the first vines, almost 900 years later, in 1988, when the holy trinity of sparkling wine grapes – Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier – found a new home in the lee of the South Downs.

And thirdly, Eric Heerema became the Owner and Custodian of Nyetimber in 2006, believing that the estate, with its ideal soil and location, had yet to achieve its full potential. Eric recruited Head Winemaker Cherie Spriggs and Winemaker Brad Greatrix, who both shared his vision of crafting the finest English sparkling wines. And since then, Nyetimber wines have gone on to achieve global acclaim, winning international awards and blind-tasting competitions, as well as being recognised by some of the world’s most celebrated wine experts.

THE LIE OF THE LAND

Spread across several separate sites, our vines are perfectly suited to the greensand and chalk soils of Sussex, Hampshire and Kent. The gentle south-facing slopes allow for the best possible exposure to the English sunshine, ensuring our grapes achieve the optimum level of ripeness before harvest.

 

WHERE ART MEETS SCIENCE

Head Winemaker Cherie Spriggs assesses every handpicked parcel of grapes for quality, ripeness and character. The fruit is then gently pressed and vinified separately, so Cherie can distinguish the subtle yet distinctive differences between each vineyard parcel. Every year, this provides a varied selection from which Cherie will craft the masterpieces of the Nyetimber range.
With our own pressing centre and winery, we guide each step of the journey from vine to bottle.

HUMAN ENDEAVOUR

Married couple Cherie Spriggs and Brad Greatrix first joined Nyetimber as winemakers in 2007, after trying a bottle gifted to them by Cherie’s parents. They instantly recognised the promise of this early wine, and since 2007, Cherie and Brad have been integral to building Nyetimber into a sparkling wine producer that rivals the best in the world.
